Abstract

This paper proposed a new single phase cycloconverter for ac drives. The proposed cycloconverter consists of specially tapped transformer (STT) with four thyristors. STT has three terminals in secondary winding with two different voltage levels. Secondary side of STT is connected to the two back to back half wave rectifier and load. Proposed cycloconverter converts 50 Hz frequency to 16.67 Hz frequency power supply and produces near to the sinusoidal output voltage. Microcontroller based circuit is designed to generate gating pulses for thyristors, and a prototype is built to verify theoretical and simulation results. Total harmonic distortion (THD) of proposed cycloconverter is 59.09% which is lower than the other existing design. The results show that the proposed method is of…
