Phospholipids from marine source: Extractions and forthcoming industrial applications

Abstract

Marine phospholipids (PLs) rich in ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have drawn keen interest recently among the researchers and consumers, and could be assumed as amazing compounds for pharmacological roles. Due to containing ω-3 PUFAs, marine PLs are highly prone to oxidation in conventional extractions accomplished by the incorporation of organic solvents, exposure to atmospheric oxygen, and high temperature. Considering this, supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction process is recommended by researchers for many advantages. Many reports revealed that SC-CO2 extraction of marine PLs is an efficient method which ensures superior product quality compared to conventional extractions.
