Abstract

Toxigenic Vibrio fluvialis (formerly Group F vibrio) have been isolated from both clinical and environmental sources in Bangladesh and the United States. Phenotypic and toxigenic characteristics of strains isolated from patients and the environment were similar. Ninety percent of the clinical isolates and 70-80% of the environmental isolates were toxigenic, when concentrated filtrates were tested by the ileal loop assay. V. fluvialis appears to be associated with other potentially pathogenic vibrios in the environment, and can be isolated from the aquatic environment of widely diverse geographical areas.
