Introduction Worldwide, accelerated progress is required to achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 (reduce child mortality) and 5 (improve maternal health) as highlighted in the United Nations Secretary-General's Global Strategy for Women's and Children's Health. Child and maternal deaths decreased globally by around 50%, and contraceptive prevalence increased from 55% to 63%.
