Abstract

Abstract This paper explores the origins and timing of the reported emergence of dowry payment and the extent of its practice in rural Bangladesh. The increasing incidence of dowry, and a shift from a norm of brideprice to dowry over a time span of less than one generation, represents a dramatic change which invites interpretation.
