Abstract
Obstetric fistulas, an abnormal communication between the vagina and the surrounding pelvic organs, were first recorded in 2050BC when they were observed in the Mummies of Ancient Egypt. Between the 17th and 19th centuries obstetric fistulas were a global problem affecting much of the United States of America and Europe. Though medical care was important in managing these patients, it was the social and economic development that had the most impact. The first dedicated fistula hospital, set up in 1855 by Marion Sims in New York, became obsolete within forty years with the advent of such progress.1 This hospital was once on the site of the now world renowned Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
