Abstract
A descriptive analysis of the food and population situation in Bangladesh over the 1960-1974 period is presented. Trends of food production and population growth are examined and compared; their implications in terms of caloric and protein consumption are presented; and the relationship of food production and land utilization with population density are analyzed. The investigations major findings are the following: 1) there has been a perceptible decline of per capita food availability over the past 15 years and in the short run the economy will be heavily dependent on foodgrain imports; 2) along with quantitative declines of caloric and protein consumption there is evidence of a qualitative shift of protein consumption toward inferior quality; 3) the population has been redistributing…
