Abstract
Land plants extract soil water under negative vascular pressure, yet stomatal regulation begins at a conserved leaf tension (∼1.3 MPa) across diverse species. Carminati et al. demonstrate that soil hydraulic constraints, rather than xylem embolism vulnerability, drive this convergence, with leaf osmotic pressure helping to set the physiological threshold for stomatal regulation.
