Abstract

Elevated levels of naturally occurring arsenic (As) in shallow Holocene aquifers in Bangladesh have undermined a long success of supplying the population with safe drinking water.Groundwater with elevated As concentrations is associated with anaerobic conditions and As is mobilized through reductive dissolution of Fe(III)- oxyhydroxides precipitated on the sediments. Local variations in geological conditions play a vital role for mobilization and immobilization of As.
