Abstract

The book is a massive academic study of Fakhruddin Ahmed, the technocrat who led Bangladesh's non party caretaker government from 2007 to 2009. It places his life and work within the broader story of Bangladesh's struggle to build stable democracy. The author argues that Ahmed is not just a historical figure but a lens through which to examine deep questions about legitimacy, emergency power, and the role of technical expertise in politics. Ahmed was born in 1940 in what was then British Bengal. He was an exceptional economics student at Dhaka University before joining the Civil Service of Pakistan.
