Optimal Supercapacitor Energy Storage System Sizing for Frequency Control in a Large-Scale Photovoltaic Integrated Grid

Abstract
The replacement of synchronous generators in the power grid with utility-scale Photovoltaic (PV) plants brings about major concerns regarding frequency stability. To address this issue, the Supercapacitor Energy Storage System (SCESS) offers a promising solution by providing rapid virtual inertia support following power disturbances. However, determining the SCESS's optimal size is necessary to maintain frequency stability in the grid while maximizing performance and minimizing expenditure. To this end, this paper proposes a genetic algorithm (GA) based optimization methodology to determine the optimal size of SCESS in ensuring frequency control following a major generator outage in large-scale PV integrated grids.
